Upcycle Kernow CIC is a Community Hub located in Portreath that focuses on sustainability and resourcefulness. Their goal is to inspire, engage and motivate individuals to save money while encouraging them to reimagine the potential of everyday items and rethink resources, reducing waste and promoting environmental responsibility. The Hub features a refill and recycling station, upskilling workshops, Tool Library & Repair Café, and Community Clothes Swap parties. These events provide a platform for people of all backgrounds, abilities and generations to share valuable skills and knowledge.
In an effort to further enhance their commitment to sustainability, Upcycle Kernow is embarking on a project to improve the energy efficiency of their current building. By making sustainable upgrades such as replacing the asbestos roof and upgrading the heating system with more energy-efficient options, they hope to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and offset their future carbon emissions.
With the support of the Community Capacity Fund, Upcycle Kernow have commissioned a comprehensive feasibility study that will produce a fully co-ordinated design, covering concept and technical designs, spatial co-ordination, and will involve the expertise of a Surveyor, Structural Engineer, Energy consultant, Cost Consultant, and Principal Designer. The Architect leading this project shares Upcycle Kernow’s sustainability ethos and adopts a ‘fabric first’ approach, prioritising the use of bio-based materials and embracing the principles of the circular economy. This innovative and forward-thinking approach ensures that the building not only meets the present needs but also contributes to a greener and more sustainable future.
Once the feasibility study is completed, it will take the project to RIBA stage 4, providing a solid foundation for Upcycle Kernow to confidently seek additional funding to move forward and bring their vision to life. This project is not only about enhancing the energy efficiency of their building, it seeks to inspire others to adopt similar practices that will contribute to a more sustainable future.
