Methane (CH4) is emitted from many human activities, including biological sources like wastewater processing and livestock farming, and leaks during oil and natural gas extraction and processing. Reducing methane emissions is vital to slowing the pace of global warming because it is a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential 27 times CO2. Methane emissions can be captured and used to replace fossil fuels in homes, vehicles and farm machinery and generate green electricity, to reduce environmental damage in the near term and provide new income for Cornish businesses.

The Net Zero Methane Hub, coordinated by IFEAA, will build a new ecosystem to accelerate the uptake of methane capture and use technology and provide maximum economic and environmental benefits for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. The Hub’s activities will focus on five enabling themes, with events taking place across Cornwall:


The project includes:

Biomethane producers and users – Grow a community of methane producers and users by sharing the latest research and showcasing methane capture technology.

Finance – Develop the business case for fugitive methane capture and use, linking with the finance community to encourage investment.

Innovation and research – Identify innovation and research requirements for methane capture and use technology, growing new research and development collaborations.

Policy and dissemination – Share network outcomes with local and national policymakers to support evidence-based policy, host a Net Zero Methane Hub Conference in Cornwall.

Education and skills – Support local training provision by highlighting higher and further education needs. Visit local schools and engage with communities to grow understanding of the approach

SPF funding for Net Zero Methane Hub will provide a step change in adoption of methane capture and use technology, supporting regional objectives to grow high quality, well paid jobs and additional income while accelerating progress towards Net Zero.
