Community Roots is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project located in Porthtowan, that has successfully transformed an acre of barren land into a thriving market garden with the dedicated efforts of community volunteers who have come together to support this initiative.
Producing delicious food for the community with the simple aim, to grow food and friendships within the community.
Community Roots’ vision extends beyond the cultivation of crops; it seeks to diversify the business and ultimately become financially self-sufficient.
To begin the journey the Community Capacity Fund grant will be used to enlist the services of an architect to produce necessary plans, oversee project management, business planning, structural engineering, environmental design consultancy, and cover the associated costs for obtaining planning permission.
When the initial phase is completed Community Roots plans to secure additional funding to construct “The Barn”, a purpose-built space that will support their current work and allow them to expand their offerings to the local community. The Barn will serve multiple purposes, including providing a professional standard kitchen space for food preparation using surplus produce, a multi-use open space for training, education, and events, an indoor, all-weather volunteer workspace for breaks and garden tasks that can be done indoors, and a veg storage area that is dark, insulated and rodent proof.
Through their efforts, Community Roots is sowing the seeds of a brighter future, one where food and friendships flourish harmoniously within a united community.
