Community Roots is a one acre, not-for-profit community interest company based at the Mount Pleasant Ecopark just outside Porthtowan. Their aim is to grow food and support the community and planet in positive ways and their vision is to become a model to inspire other communities to do the same.

They believe passionately that good, healthy, locally grown food that is grown in ways which protect our beautiful planet should be available to everyone. They grow vegetables in ways which support nature and they generate an income by selling their vegetables in weekly veg bags. They have a sliding price scale so people with more money can pay more so that Community Roots can offer vegetables for reduced prices to those who otherwise couldn’t afford them. Last year they helped donate over £5,000 worth of vegetables in their local community.

They grow their vegeteables with the help of an incredible volunteer work force of people aged from 0 to 92! Their volunteers come for a whole host of reasons, some want company and friendship, some want to learn how to grow veg, some enjoy being outside and doing physical work, some people want to belong to a community. Community Roots welcomes everyone and believe that every single person, regardless of age, background or ability, can find a place at Roots and can contribute meaningfully to their project.

Unfortunately, feeding people good food, making people happy, and protecting the planet are not financially viable activities, so to help make their project more financially sustainable, they have been awarded funding to build an amazing “Barn” which will help them increase their income and reach and diversify their activities. The space will be used to process surplus vegetables, teach people about healthy eating and growing, hold events and training, and also to have tea breaks out of the elements!
