Mount Hawke Skatepark

Lead Organisation: Mount Hawke Youth and Community Group

Investment Priority: Community and Place

Fund: Community Capacity Fund

SPF awarded : £5,600

Location:  Mount Hawke

Formed in 1986, Mount Hawke Skatepark is one of the longest-running indoor parks in the United Kingdom. Built originally to meet the needs of young people living in rural Cornish communities, Mount Hawke started as an outdoor facility but was developed inside in 1996, becoming the South West’s largest indoor skatepark.

The purpose-built warehouse is split into different sections: street and transition; the ‘black pool’; the bowl; the rhythm section; the vert ramp and mini ramp. There is also a new outdoor plaza and pump track, making it an all-weather facility. The park also has a café, a small shop, a dance studio and a small music space.

The Community Capacity Fund grant will fund a consultant to work with staff and trustees to write a 5 year business plan that will assist with improvements to the business model ensuring the long-term viability of the skatepark. It will also help them to identify priorities for future works to improve the site and attract more users. The project will involve consultation with users and stakeholders encouraging ownership of the organisation’s development going forward.
