Restoration and Reimagining The Guildhall

Restoration and Reimagining The Guildhall

Lead Organisation: Helston Town Council

Investment Priority: Community and Place

Fund: Community Capacity Fund

SPF awarded: £24,750

Location: Helston

The Community Capacity Fund grant will be used to commission professional services to explore 3 key elements:

  • A feasibility study will be undertaken to explore the viability and demand for creating a Workbox model workspace in the basement of the Guildhall. Consultation will be carried out with local micro businesses both in the town and across the Lizard Peninsula to identify need. The feasibility study will include a proposed layout that will incorporate best use of the footprint for maximum desk and work space.
  • To commission architects to create drawings of the reimagined Guildhall, covering the whole building and providing solutions for how the space can be used most effectively, as well as future proofing it as a central asset for Helston for generations to come. These drawings will be used for planning purposes, RIBA stages and public consultation events. The architects will also create a virtual tour of the reimagined building, and this will be used when consulting with local residents, organisations and businesses the bring the proposed designs alive.
  • To engage a Quantity Surveyor to undertake cost consultancy and cost planning to determine a realistic budget for the restoration and reimagining project. This piece of work will be used when submitting funding applications for the capital works.

The wider restoration and reimagining capital project will see the historic Guildhall transformed into an asset which will benefit many new users from both Helston and the wider Lizard Peninsula area. The reimagining of the Courtroom will open up opportunities for income generation through private hire for functions and events. The ground floor space will also be more accessible and will be available for hire by community groups as well as hosting the Town Council reception.
