Access to Penderleath Woodlands currently involves having to climb over a Cornish hedge, which is potentially hazardous, particularly when the stones and grass are wet.
This project will open up and stabilise the wall as well as add gateposts and a gate so that there is no longer any climbing involved in accessing the site. This will make it safer for existing volunteers as well as encouraging those who are less mobile to volunteer. It will remove barriers to getting out and being active, doing physical activity and socialising.
The works to the wall and the gateposts will be carried out by a traditionally skilled hedger. The gate will be forged in the traditional Penwith style by a local blacksmith.
All activity on the site will encourage nature recovery, for example tree planting, tree care and meadow restoration, as well as keeping the site free from Himalayan Balsam which is an invasive species. Training opportunities will offered including scything courses. Penderleath is part of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust network.
