Pendeen Community Cemetery Project

Pendeen Community Cemetery Project

Lead Organisation: Lands End Peninsula Community Land Trust

Investment Priority: Community and Place

Fund: CLUP

SPF awarded (£): £143,643

Location: Pendeen

The Lands End Peninsula Community Land Trust (LEPCLT) enables the provision of housing, amenities and facilities in the interest of social welfare, with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents of the area.

The existing graveyard in Pendeen village is now at capacity and there are no burial places available for those wishing to be laid to rest in their community, close to many generations of their family and friends. There are also no plans by the Church or Council to take on further provision.

This project will establish a community-run cemetery in Pendeen, which will be open to all members of the community, welcoming all faiths, beliefs, and lifestyles without discrimination. It will allow people to feel reassured that their final wishes, being laid to rest in their home community, close to family and friends, can be fulfilled.

A section of the field and an existing car park plot adjacent to the community centre building, Centre of Pendeen have been donated to the LEPCLT by the local landowners for the creation of this new community cemetery facility. The work required as part of the project are the groundworks and construction elements that will turn the area into a fully operational, accessible, functioning community cemetery.

It will be run entirely as an affordable, non-profit making facility. This is believed to be the first venture of its kind in the whole of the UK.
