St Just Miners’ Chapel is a Grade II* listed building of exceptional cultural, historical and spiritual importance. As part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, it represents a rare and significant example of the area’s architectural and social heritage. Following a successful Community Ownership Fund grant, the building has been purchased for the long‑term benefit of the community.
To support the next stage of its redevelopment, the Community Capacity Fund will be used to undertake a comprehensive renewables feasibility study. This work will produce a detailed design and concept plan exploring suitable renewable energy solutions for the Chapel. The findings will inform updates to existing concept designs and guide future technical specifications, planning, and capital costings. Ensuring the building can operate sustainably is a key step in securing its future as a warm, energy‑efficient and functional community asset.
Alongside the energy study, the project will commission a consultant to initiate a local heritage and community buildings network. The consultant will facilitate the first two meetings and bring together other heritage and community spaces in St Just. Establishing this partnership will help organisations collaborate, share expertise, and strengthen their ability to secure future funding.
The overall aim is to reinforce the Chapel’s role as a place of local pride and identity. By preserving its historical significance while investing in its future, the project will help create a versatile, well‑maintained space capable of hosting a wide range of cultural, social and community activities. This work supports the vision of the Chapel as both a cherished heritage landmark and a vibrant destination for generations to come.
