This project will create a Community Energy Network for the Isles of Scilly, combining existing and future renewable energy generation with an electricity tariff that allows local customers to directly buy locally generated renewable energy through their electricity bills.

The Isles of Scilly Community Venture has a long-term goal to change the model of the Isles of Scilly’s electricity supply.  This project will create a Community Energy Network (CEN) for the Isles of Scilly, and will include the following activities:

  • The integration of existing Isles of Scilly Community Venture owned solar generation assets into the CEN, along with developing a roadmap for further local renewable generation as the CEN develops.
  • A CEN local energy tariff, which local electricity users can sign up to that will preferentially match them with the locally generated energy when available at a discount to their normal energy prices.
  • An acceleration of the domestic smart meter rollout on the islands helping people to take control of their electricity bills and understand their consumption in detail.
  • An Energy Clinic service to support local residents with understanding their bills, dealing with supplier issues, identifying ways to reduce their energy costs and providing energy efficiency advice.

This project will give the residents and businesses of Scilly an opportunity to reduce their energy bills through access to cheaper locally generated energy as well as reduce electricity consumption through the deeper insight provided by having a smart meter.  It will also help Scilly’s economy more widely through an increase in circularity in the local energy market and through increased demand for skills in renewables.
