Hayle Pilot Gig Club is expanding its rowing capacity and deepening community engagement by purchasing its original wooden gig, Isis (now named Amelie), from Newhaven Gig Club. This acquisition will support the club’s growing membership and enhance opportunities for training and racing throughout the year.
Founded in 1976, Hayle Gig Club is one of Cornwall’s longest-standing gig clubs, with over 100 active members. Despite a 40% increase in membership in recent years, the club is committed to attracting more men and juniors to the sport. To achieve this, it is launching a community outreach campaign that includes:
- Free taster sessions to introduce new rowers to the sport.
- Partnerships with local schools and clubs to encourage wider participation.
The purchase of Isis is a key part of this strategy. As the club’s original boat, it holds historical significance and its return would mark a meaningful milestone ahead of Hayle Gig Club’s 50th anniversary in 2026.
Having an additional gig will:
- Increase training and racing capacity, allowing more members to participate.
- Enable attendance at more events throughout the year.
- Support leadership development, with crew captains receiving training to manage teams and logistics.
