When Harrowbarrow’s village shop closed in August 2025 after a century of service, the community was left without a local place to buy essentials. Determined to keep this vital resource, residents raised over £48,000 to purchase a modular building and fit it out as a new shop. Planning permission has been secured and the site prepared, with the shop set to open this autumn.
The next phase focuses on making the building climate-secure and creating a welcoming space for the community. This funding will help purchase external insulation and wood cladding to maintain a consistent temperature inside, as well as extend the roof to protect the building from the elements. This extension will also provide a covered outdoor area where people can meet and socialise. Benches and seating will be added to make this a true community hub, suitable for events and gatherings.
The shop will be run by local volunteers, with training provided to ensure everyone feels confident and supported. A strong volunteer base is already in place, and several residents have stepped forward to lead different aspects of the project, fostering a sense of ownership and pride. In the long term, the ambition is to employ a part-time manager, creating local employment and ensuring the shop’s sustainability.
