Digital Futures – building and transforming digital workforce skills for today and tomorrow.

This innovative project addresses the digital skills gap in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, identified in the 2022 Deep Dive Report and aligns with Cornwall’s strategic vision and economic ambition.

The Digital Futures partnership will provide training in specialist digital skills for non-tech businesses and advanced digital skills for tech businesses, plus inspire individuals not currently working, or employed in other sectors, to consider digital careers. This encompasses AI, immersive tech, software, data, digital leadership, train the trainer and continuous professional development for teachers to encourage wider participation and ensure reach and long-lasting impact.

Led by Truro and Penwith College, the delivery partners are Falmouth University, University of Exeter, Step Into Learning, Real Ideas, Software Cornwall, TECWomen, Digital Peninsular Network, Cornwall Marine Network, Headforwards, and Cornwall Council’s Digital Future Academy. Strategic partners are The Cornwall College Group, Council of Isles of Scilly, and Celtic Sea Power.

This dynamic collaboration will employ a multi-faceted approach to tackle the challenges highlighted by the Deep Dive Report. Working with employers to understand current and future needs, the project seeks to empower the workforce, co-develop blended learning opportunities to create a sustainable pool of skilled professionals, and encourage new talent via an outreach programme. Working with schools, aiming especially at girls, Digital Futures will ignite interest in digital tech careers from an early age. Accredited and non-accredited digital skills training will deliver:

  • Improved Workplace Skills: Enhancing productivity and efficiency through specialist and advanced digital skills.
  • Expanded Talent Pool: Meeting the demand for skilled professionals in the digital sector, establishing pathways to digital careers, and encouraging wider participation including creating confident teachers.
  • Capacity Building and Enhanced Digital Capability for Businesses: Improvement of business performance across all industries, including economic priority sectors including advanced manufacturing and Createch, through upskilling of employees and effective adoption of digital technology.
  • Support for Tech Businesses: Providing access to skilled digital professionals.
