Cornwall Samaritans Capital Development

Cornwall Samaritans Capital Development

Lead Organisation: Samaritans of Cornwall at Truro

Investment Priority: Community and Place

Fund: Community Organisation Fund

SPF awarded: £495,000

Location: Cornwall-wide

Cornwall Samaritans operates from a building owned by the charity centrally located in the middle of the county in Truro. The site is easily accessible via major roads and public transport for volunteers, partners and service users. However, a 3-story “town house”, the building is problematic, not fully accessible and no longer fit for purpose.

Major capital work costing over £1million is needed to enable Cornwall Samaritans to reach more beneficiaries, grow services and make the charity more environmentally and financially sustainable.

With over £875,000 now secured, alterations can begin to the charity’s building to enable it to operate from the ground floor, made accessible to all.  The first and second floors will be converted into separate, rentable accommodation, providing income for financial stability. A new, separate, self-contained Training Centre will also be built within the grounds, for volunteers, partners and the community’s use.

The capital developments will enable Cornwall Samaritans to help save and change more lives. Currently responding to over 20,000 calls for help each year via phone and webchat, Cornwall Samaritans feeds into a national network where the first available Samaritan responds. This work is well understood, but lesser known is that Cornwall Samaritans’ reach many more thousands of adults and children through proactive awareness and preventative work within Cornwall’s community.

With more accessible space and optimum facilities, Cornwall Samaritans will be able to increase their volunteers and impact directly, as well as partnership working.

Every contact has the potential to save a life; the legacy of the redevelopment will provide structural and financial stability to enable and ensure Cornwall Samaritans continues to support calls for help long into the future.
