Par Bay Community Trust was established in 2014 to serve the community of St Blazey, Par and Tywardreath, by preventing or relieving poverty, advancing the health of residents, developing skills, advancing education and assisting in the provision of recreational facilities. Having purchased and renovated an old auction house in the centre of Par, named ‘Cornubia’, the Trust, run by volunteers, now hosts a wide range of activities and events for the community, two social enterprises, meeting rooms, a community garden and offices that are currently rented by NHS social prescribers and the local diabetes team.

To improve the services available to the community, this project will help with a range of enhancements to the building. Par Bay Community Trust will firstly reduce their ongoing energy costs by installing new windows, (which will also improve the local Streetscape) solar panels and a battery to store renewable energy for the building. The solar panels will allow them to heat all areas of the building and therefore increase both the number of activities and size of community groups that can use Cornubia. This will also ensure that more revenue can be used to support the community and keep rental costs down for the social enterprises and community groups.

They will also be upgrading the sound quality in the main hall with eco-friendly acoustic dampers; these will benefit those who are hearing-impaired or neurologically diverse, as well as events for young children and families where current noise levels can impact. This enhancement means that Cornubia can expand their offering of workshops and group spaces to meet a wider range of needs within the community and be even more inclusive. The project will also invest in blackout curtains which will enable them to increase opportunities for events that require audio-visual presentations particularly during the daytime and in the summer. All of these improvements will allow Cornubia to address the challenges caused by increased energy costs, provide enhanced provision and a greater number of activities, increase their footfall, and future proof this valuable local resource for the community of Par Bay.
