Community Warm Space & Café

Community Warm Space & Café

Lead Organisation: Marshgate Stores Ltd

Investment Priority: Community and Place

Fund: Community Levelling Up

SPF awarded: £18,498

Location: Marshgate, Camelford

Marshgate Stores and Post Office is located in the small, rural village of Marshgate in Camelford. The village has poor public transport links and travelling out of the village is difficult for some residents. In turn, the store has become a social hub for the community where local people gather and stop for a chat, sometimes using the back room as a place for advice or support, although this is a makeshift area, mainly used for storage.

With the help of CLUP funding, this project will repurpose the underused storage area to create a warm space and coffee shop for members of the local community, offering a comfortable place to stop, have a hot drink and other refreshments that are for sale in the shop.

The storage room will be redecorated, together with the installation of an accessible door, window, disabled compliant customer toilet facilities and a welcoming seating area. The area can be used by the local community such as parents after dropping children at the village school and elderly people. The café will be a place local people can walk to easily and find company and a place to stop and sit for a while. The large number of supportive comments from local residents during the planning application shows how much this service will be appreciated by the Marshgate community.
