Centre for Excellence

Lead Organisation: Cornwall College

Investment Priority: Supporting Local Business

Fund: Strategic Business, Enterprise and R&D Infrastructure

SPF awarded: £574,820

Location: The Eden Project, Boldeva, Cornwall

The Eden Project and The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) have joined forces to establish a cutting-edge laboratory to help farmers, growers and horticulturalists in Cornwall manage their land and soils more sustainably and productively.

The Centre for Excellence in Land-Based Research and Knowledge Transfer will be located at Growing Point, the Eden Project’s new state-of-the-art plant nursery complex, and will be equipped with advanced technology for soil, plant and feedstock analysis.

Its primary objective is to provide local farmers, growers and horticulturalists with the knowledge and tools needed to manage their land and resources sustainably and efficiently.

This initiative is of utmost importance as the agricultural sector in Cornwall faces a transition away from direct government support towards environmentally friendly land management and sustainable farming incentives. Cornwall’s agri-food industry plays a pivotal role in the region’s economy, with nearly 75% of the land dedicated to farming, contributing to approximately 17% of the county’s economic output and nearly 29% of its employment.

The Centre of Excellence will empower rural businesses by promoting regenerative farming practices, focusing on soil health, carbon sequestration, water retention, reduced flooding, biodiversity conservation and habitat creation. This multifaceted approach will help businesses navigate the complex landscape of environmental regulations while enhancing their productivity and competitiveness.

Funding for this project comes from the Good Growth Programme, which has received £132 million over three years from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. Managed by Cornwall Council, the programme prioritises green and inclusive growth, aligning with the goals of the Centre of Excellence.

The Centre for Excellence in Land-Based Research and Knowledge Transfer promises to be a beacon of hope for sustainable agriculture and a catalyst for positive change in Cornwall’s environment and economy.
