Cornwall Gateway CIC, has secured support from the CIoS Good Growth Team to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to address the needs of the Cornish Food and Drink industry. The primary objective of this research is to facilitate the industry’s expansion, enabling it to access new markets, strengthen the local food supply chain and to help unlock its full potential.

Leveraging on the expertise of a feasibility board comprised of industry professionals, they aim to build upon the groundwork laid by Better Bodmin’s original plans for the Bodmin Agri-Food and Drink Centre, which secured funding through the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in 2017. Their approach involves collaborating with key stakeholders and aligning with national and local government food strategies to conduct in-depth feasibility studies. These studies will focus on identifying gaps within the Cornish Agri-Food & Drink industry with the aim to attract private investment. Research over the past two years has underscored the urgent need for a Strategic Sector Asset for Cornwall to support economic development, whilst shoring up food security and reducing our carbon footprint. Further research conducted through this project aims to prove the need for the following:

  • Manufacturing Shared Resource Centre: Equipped with food processing, packaging, distribution, and storage facilities, as well as NPD kitchens and start-up units, to support local businesses.
  • Business Centre: Providing meeting, conference, and training facilities to foster collaboration and growth opportunities within the industry.
  • Research & Development: Implementing pioneering research facilities to drive innovation and competitiveness in the industry.
  • STEM Skills Centre: Collaborating with FE institutes to establish a centre dedicated to nurturing talent in agri-food & drink-related STEM fields.
  • Food Tourist Destination: Creating an outlet for Cornish Food & Drink producers to attract visitors, educate the next generation and celebrate the great food Cornwall has to offer.

The funding will cover the expenses of a professional team of specialist, including food and drink industry experts, monitoring and evaluation experts, site investigators, analysts, report writers, as well as legal and financial advisors. Cornwall Gateway with the support of CIoS Good Growth Team is committed to supporting the Cornish food and drink industry’s growth journey, empowering it to reach new heights and customers.
