Innovation and Growth for St Ewe Eggs

Enabling St Ewe’s Transition into Liquid Egg Manufacturing

Cornwall‑based St Ewe Free Range Eggs has long been recognised for its quality, innovation and strong family‑driven values. Through support from the Good Growth Programme, the business has taken a major step forward through ‘Project Elixir’ – a significant investment in a new liquid egg production facility.

This project is helping St Ewe grow sustainably, create skilled jobs, strengthen local supply chains and open new opportunities for product development and export, all while continuing to champion Cornish agriculture.

“The Good Growth Fund has been an amazing springboard for our project. It’s a massive game changer for our business… and we can do all of this from Cornwall.”

– Rebecca Tonks, CEO & Founder, St Ewe Free Range Eggs Ltd

Supporting Good Growth in Cornwall

St Ewe employs 150 people, and with support from the Good Growth Programme, the business has increased its workforce by a further 10%, recruiting into engineering, operations and supply chain roles.

The funding has also enabled improvements at their Grampound Road headquarters near Truro, including the installation of high‑tech production equipment and the creation of new space for the liquid egg manufacturing plant.

Liquid Egg: A Game-Changing New Product

At the heart of Project Elixir is the installation of an advanced egg‑breaking and processing line capable of processing an impressive 72,000 eggs per hour. This new machinery means St Ewe can produce up to 100 tonnes of liquid egg each week.

The investment will allow St Ewe to:

  • Launch a new product line using the same high‑quality eggs the brand is known for
  • Increase efficiency and consistency for customers
  • Diversify into new markets and develop future product innovations
  • Explore international export opportunities for liquid egg products

Local partners, including long‑term customers in Cornwall’s food and drink sector, are already seeing the benefits. This includes Exploding Bakery, a national wholesale cake supplier based near Exeter, who recently made the switch from St Ewe’s shell egg to liquid egg. They use approximately 400,00 eggs a year, equivalent to about 20 tonnes, meaning the new product offers an huge efficiency saving.

“The product has a functionality that really will help us scale our business”.

 – Oliver Coysh, Founder, Exploding Bakery.

Liquid egg offers improved consistency, easier handling and reliable performance in baking while maintaining the outstanding flavour and quality St Ewe eggs are known for.

Driving Circular Economy Benefits

Liquid egg production creates a large volume of eggshell as a by‑product. St Ewe is exploring how this material can be reused within Cornwall’s farming community.

Eggshell can act as a natural crop improver, helping enrich soils and support agricultural output. This strengthens the circular economy by turning waste into a useful resource and supporting environmental goals.

A Springboard for Future Growth

The Good Growth Programme has accelerated a major evolution of the business. The investment is enabling St Ewe bring new products to market faster, use cutting‑edge technology, and grow from within Cornwall while staying true to its values.

Project Elixir advances St Ewe’s position as a leader in sustainable, innovative food production and strengthens its contribution to Cornwall’s economy for the long term.

This project is made possible thanks to investment from the Good Growth Programme, funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
